Welcome to first grade! I am excited to begin this journey with you and hope that you are ready for a great year! We will be working closely together this year, so introductions are in order.
I was born and grew up in a small town just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I love everything about my hometown, including the sports teams and all the quirks that come with that great city! Many of my family members still live in Pittsburgh, and I enjoy going ‘home’ to visit them on holidays and breaks. My family and friends are the most important things in my life and I could not imagine my world without them! I have a sweet dog named Dolly and a class pet named Whitney! They’ll surely be involved in many stories I tell throughout the year, along with my friends and family!
I spent my first year of college in Madrid, Spain studying psychology (and Spanish, of course!). I moved back to the United States and began to attend Clarion University, where I changed my major to elementary education and Spanish. When graduation finally came around, I began to look for jobs. I found a job at Reedy Creek Elementary here in North Carolina and moved here to begin my career.
I was hired to teach third grade. I taught third grade for two years before I decided I would like to try out first grade. I really enjoyed first grade and stayed there for three years. At the end of that third year, I was offered the opportunity to teach English in a school in Loja, Ecuador and I could not refuse. I returned to North Carolina in January of the next year, where I taught math and science intervention to third through fifth graders. The following school year, I returned to the regular classroom as a fifth grade teacher, where I taught for four years. Last year, I went back to my days as a first grade teacher, and I'm so excited to be back!
While I thoroughly enjoyed teaching fifth grade, I sincerely missed working with first graders. I hold high expectations for all of my students in an effort to help them grow as much as they can and to help prepare them for the years to come. I believe independence and problem solving are important skills for every child and this year the students will work toward building their independence and confidence in their learning. I truly look forward to working together with you toward success this year.
